Applying for an Aadhaar card requires submitting specific documents to verify your identity and personal details. Understanding the documents required for Aadhaar card enrolment, listed under UIDAI’s “List of Acceptable Documents for Enrolment and Update,” helps ensure that your application process is smooth and hassle‑free.

In certain cases, such as applications for children, family members, or foreign residents, additional supporting documents may also be needed. Knowing which documents are accepted and ensuring they are properly self-attested can help avoid delays during Aadhaar enrolment or updates.

Proofs of Relationship Documents Required for Aadhaar Enrolment

If you are not the head of your family, you have to submit proof of relationship (with the head of the family) documents. Among the new Aadhaar card documents, these proofs should show your relationship with the head of the family. You can provide any of the following for this purpose:

  • A pension card that shows a relationship with the HoF

  • PDS card

  • Passport used in HoF‑based enrolment

  • CGHS/ECHS Card

  • A certificate of identity establishing the relationship with the head of the family, issued by a village head or panchayat in rural areas.

Documents Required for Aadhaar Card for Children

Children under 5 years of age are exempt from submitting biometric data. However, enrolment is mandatory through the Head of Family (usually a parent or legal guardian). For this, both parents have to submit Aadhaar and one of them must complete biometric authentication.

For children aged 5 years and above, the following documents must be provided for obtaining an Aadhaar card:

  • Proof of Identity Documents

  • Proof of Address Documents

  • A Birth Certificate

  • An Aadhaar card of a parent

While speaking about documents required for an Aadhaar card for children, you should note that children under the age of 5 years may not have the documentation required in their own right. In such cases, the documents about the parents may be submitted as proof.

Note: Biometric information must be updated once the child turns 5 years old and again at the age of 15 as per UIDAI requirements.

Aadhaar Card for Foreign Residents

Foreign nationals residing in India may also be eligible to apply for an Aadhaar card if they meet the residency criteria specified by the Unique Identification Authority of India. Individuals must visit an authorised Aadhaar enrolment centre and submit valid identity and residency proof during the application process. The documents required depend on the applicant’s residency category.

  1. OCI Cardholders

Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders must submit a valid foreign passport along with a valid OCI card. They must also show proof that they have stayed in India for at least 182 days in the preceding 12 months. Aadhaar issued to OCI cardholders is generally valid for up to 10 years.

  1. Long Term Visa (LTV) Document Holders

Applicants must provide a valid foreign passport along with a Long-Term Visa issued to eligible minority communities from neighbouring countries.

  1. Nepal and Bhutan Nationals

Applicants may provide a valid passport or other recognised identity documents, such as a citizenship certificate or voter identity card issued by their home country.

  1. Other Resident Foreigners

Applicants must submit a valid foreign passport, visa, and a registration certificate or residential permit issued by the FRRO or FRO authorities in India.

Aadhaar Card as a Document Proof

An Aadhaar card is widely accepted across India as a valid identity and address proof. Issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India, it contains a unique 12-digit number linked to an individual’s biometric and demographic details.

Aadhaar can be used during verification processes for services such as opening bank accounts, applying for loans, or completing KYC for financial products.

Many institutions also accept Aadhaar for government schemes and digital verification. However, while widely used, Aadhaar is generally considered one of several acceptable documents for identity and address verification.

Conclusion

The Aadhaar card plays an important role in identity verification and access to various services in India. To successfully enrol or update your Aadhaar details, you must submit valid Aadhaar card documents such as identity proof, address proof, and date of birth proof. Preparing these documents in advance and ensuring they are correctly self-attested can help make the enrolment process smoother. By understanding the documentation requirements, applicants can avoid delays and ensure their Aadhaar application is processed efficiently.
