The government has called on commercial LPG consumers to transition to piped natural gas (PNG) where feasible, as part of a strategy to alleviate pressure on LPG supplies and promote cleaner fuel options.
This initiative has been discussed in recent days, aiming to ensure stable fuel availability across India.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, highlighted that commercial LPG users in areas with existing PNG infrastructure should consider switching. Gas distribution companies are offering incentives to encourage this transition.
For example, Indraprastha Gas Limited is providing free gas worth ₹500 to domestic consumers who connect before March 31. GAIL and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited are also offering incentives to promote the shift to PNG.
To convert from LPG to PNG, consumers must apply for a new PNG connection through their local gas distribution company. This involves a feasibility survey, pipeline and meter installation, and modification of the LPG stove to make it PNG compatible.
Required documents include proof of identity and address, and possibly ownership proof. The conversion involves costs such as a security deposit ranging from ₹6,000 to ₹7,000, with additional charges for excess pipeline installation.
PNG is a cleaner-burning fuel compared to LPG and is supplied directly through pipelines, eliminating the need for cylinder deliveries and storage.
This not only eases demand pressure on LPG cylinders but also promotes cleaner fuel use.
The government has been expanding city gas distribution networks to increase access to PNG for both households and commercial establishments.

PNG offers increased safety and convenience. It provides a continuous and uninterrupted gas supply, freeing up kitchen space by eliminating the need for cylinder storage. PNG is lighter than air, reducing fire risks during leaks, and has more stable pricing.
After obtaining a PNG connection, consumers are generally required to surrender their subsidised LPG connection, although some policies may allow retaining a single LPG cylinder at a non-subsidised rate.
Switching from LPG to PNG offers several advantages, including increased convenience, safety, and economic benefits. While the initial costs may be significant, the long-term savings and environmentally-friendly nature of PNG make it a compelling choice.
