Tesla Inc. is expected to introduce a 6-seat version of its Model Y in India, with a possible rollout as early as next week, according to Bloomberg reports citing people aware of the matter.
This would add a new configuration to its current line-up, which includes only the 5-seat Model Y launched in July last year.
The new variant is positioned as a longer version of the existing vehicle.
The model, referred to as Model Y L, features a long-wheelbase design and 3 rows of seating. It was first introduced in China in August and is priced from about 339,000 yuan (around $49,679), placing it above the standard version in that market.
The additional seating capacity is for buyers seeking more interior space compared to the current offering.
The Model Y L is produced at Tesla’s Shanghai facility, which currently serves as the export base for vehicles shipped to India. The same plant supplies the standard and long-range versions sold in the country.
There has been no indication of local production, and imports remain the primary route for Tesla’s India operations.
Tesla’s volumes in India have remained low since its entry. The company recorded 227 vehicle registrations in 2025, according to official data, against an import allowance of 2,500 units.
Lower demand led to price reductions earlier this year, with discounts of up to ₹2 lakh offered to clear inventory.
Electric vehicles imported into India attract duties ranging from 70% to 110%, contributing to higher retail prices. This has been a key factor affecting demand levels for Tesla’s vehicles.
The 6-seat variant is expected to be priced above the existing Model Y, showing both its configuration and the prevailing duty structure.
Tesla has been expanding its portfolio through updated variants rather than entirely new models. The Model Y L has been confirmed for markets including Australia and New Zealand, with additional regions under consideration.
In 2025, Tesla’s global sales declined for a second consecutive year, while BYD Co. surpassed it in overall electric vehicle sales.

The addition of a longer-wheelbase Model Y would introduce a new configuration to Tesla’s India line-up. Demand is likely to remain linked to pricing and import-related costs.
