Flipkart to Enter Food Delivery Business, Set to Challenge Zomato and Swiggy

Flipkart is set to enter India's highly competitive food delivery market, taking on established players such as Zomato and Swiggy. Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy has confirmed that the Walmart-owned e-commerce company will launch its food delivery service in the coming weeks, beginning with a pilot rollout in select cities.
The move marks Flipkart's latest expansion beyond e-commerce and quick commerce as it looks to build a presence in another high-growth digital services segment. The company plans to refine the offering based on customer feedback before expanding it across the country.
Flipkart to Begin with a Limited Rollout
Speaking in an interview with Moneycontrol, Krishnamurthy said Flipkart will first test its food delivery platform in a few cities rather than launching nationwide.
According to the company, the service will be available through a dedicated food delivery app while also being integrated into the main Flipkart app. Similar to the rollout strategy adopted for Flipkart Minutes, the company will evaluate customer response before scaling operations to additional markets.
Flipkart is also expected to leverage the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), which could help it onboard restaurants and expand its network more efficiently.
Focus on Better Restaurant Choice and Customer Experience
Rather than replicating existing food delivery platforms, Flipkart aims to differentiate itself through a broader selection of restaurants, dependable deliveries, and an improved overall customer experience.
Krishnamurthy said the company sees an opportunity to bring meaningful improvements to the market. While the initial rollout will be limited, Flipkart's long-term objective is to build a nationwide food delivery business.
Competition in India's Food Delivery Market Intensifies
Flipkart's entry comes as competition in the sector continues to evolve. Established players are introducing new offerings to attract customers and improve profitability.
Rapido recently launched Ownly, a platform focused on lower customer prices and improved economics for restaurant partners. Swiggy has introduced Toing to cater to value-conscious consumers, while Zomato continues to strengthen its presence with Bistro.

Conclusion
Flipkart's entry into food delivery is set to intensify competition in one of India's fastest-growing digital sectors. Backed by its large customer base, expanding quick commerce ecosystem, and potential ONDC integration, the company is positioning itself as a serious challenger. The success of its pilot launch will likely determine the pace of its nationwide expansion and its ability to compete with established market leaders.
