Sarvam Signs Five-Year AI Agreement with Defence Ministry

Indian AI company Sarvam has signed a five-year memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Defence’s Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), as per news reports. The plan is to develop AI applications for use across the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.
The agreement sets up a framework for future projects. The companies have not announced the deal’s value, which applications will be developed first, or when they will be ready for use.
What the Agreement Covers?
Sarvam will work on AI tools for operational support, training, and military decision-making. The proposed applications include target acquisition, combining information from different sensors, and systems that help connect data across the sensor-to-shooter process.
The framework also covers geospatial and perception systems. The aim is to make common AI capabilities available across the three Services and related organisations, allowing experience from one part of the armed forces to inform work elsewhere.
Sarvam’s Defence Division to Lead
The work will be handled by Chanakya, Sarvam’s division focused on national security and defence. It will use the company’s AI technology, including its Sarvam 105B foundation model.
Sarvam says the initiative is intended to build AI capabilities in India using Indian data and computing infrastructure. The announcement also states that human oversight will remain in place for operational decisions, though detailed safeguards and deployment procedures have not been disclosed.

Conclusion
The five-year agreement gives Sarvam a route to work on AI applications across India’s three armed services. What it delivers in practice will depend on the projects selected and how the systems perform in military settings.
