Indian stock markets will remain shut on Thursday, May 28, 2026, on account of Bakri Eid (Eid-ul-Adha).

The holiday falls on a Thursday, which is usually an important trading day for derivatives expiry. Investors and traders are therefore closely watching exchange schedules and settlement timelines.

Why Is Bakri Eid Celebrated?

Bakri Eid, also known as Eid-ul-Adha, is one of the major Islamic festivals celebrated in India and across the world.

The festival symbolises sacrifice and devotion and is observed as a public holiday in many parts of the country.

NSE And BSE To Remain Closed

Both National Stock Exchange of India and Bombay Stock Exchange will remain closed on May 28.

Trading will remain suspended across:

  • Equity cash market
  • Equity Futures & Options (F&O)
  • Securities lending and borrowing
  • Interest rate derivatives

No trading activity will take place during the day. Orders placed after market hours may remain pending until trading resumes on Friday, May 29.

MCX To Operate Only In Evening Session

Unlike equity markets, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India will observe only a partial holiday.

  • Morning session: Closed
  • Evening session: Open from 5 PM onwards

The evening trading session is expected to continue till 11:30 PM or 11:55 PM depending on the commodity segment.

This allows traders to continue participating in commodities such as gold, silver, crude oil, natural gas, and base metals.

Banks May Remain Closed In Many States

Banks are also expected to remain closed in several states due to the festival holiday.

States likely to observe bank holidays include:

  • Maharashtra
  • Karnataka
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Rajasthan
  • Bihar
  • Goa
  • Jammu & Kashmir

However, digital banking services such as UPI, internet banking, mobile banking, ATMs, and IMPS transfers are expected to function normally.

Cheque clearing and certain settlement-related banking activities could face delays.

T+1 Settlement Cycle To Be Affected

Since May 28 is both a trading and clearing holiday, the T+1 settlement cycle will be impacted.

Shares sold on Wednesday, May 27, are likely to settle on Friday, May 29, instead of Thursday.

Investors expecting payouts or delivery settlements should plan accordingly before the holiday.

Weekly Expiry Contracts May Shift

As Thursday is usually the weekly expiry day for many derivative contracts, expiry schedules may be preponed to Wednesday, May 27, subject to official exchange confirmation.

This may apply to:

  • Sensex contracts
  • Bankex contracts
  • BSE stock options and futures

Traders are advised to complete rollovers, hedging, and margin adjustments before Wednesday’s closing session.

How The Holiday May Impact Traders?

The Bakri Eid market holiday could affect traders and investors in several ways:

  • Equity and derivatives trading will remain closed
  • Weekly expiries may move earlier
  • Settlement timelines may get delayed
  • Commodity trading will be available only in the evening
  • Margin management becomes important ahead of the holiday

Conclusion

Indian equity markets, including NSE and BSE, will remain closed on May 28, 2026, for Bakri Eid. However, MCX will resume operations during the evening session. Traders and investors should keep track of settlement schedules and possible changes in weekly expiry dates before the holiday.
