JLR Plans Job Cuts as UK Government Rules Out Financial Support

Luxury car maker Jaguar Land Rover started a voluntary redundancy programme as it looks to cut costs. The company is expected to reduce around 4,000 jobs over the next 2 years.
As per news reports, the move comes at a difficult time for the carmaker. JLR is dealing with higher costs, weaker sales, US tariffs and stronger competition from Chinese carmakers selling cheaper electric and hybrid vehicles.
JLR Plans to Cut Costs
JLR is looking to save around £1.7 billion over the next two years. It also wants to bring down the number of vehicles it needs to sell to cover its costs to 300,000.
The company is also looking at ways to simplify its business as it deals with changing conditions in major markets. JLR employs around 33,000 people in the UK and about 40,000 globally.
UK Government Rules Out Financial Support
UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the government would not step in to run the company or decide how many people it should employ.
Reynolds said he had spoken with JLR's chief executive and Unite's general secretary and was due to meet them early this week. He also said the government would want to reduce the impact of any job losses.
Competition From Chinese Carmakers
JLR is facing more competition in the UK and other markets from Chinese companies such as BYD and Chery. These companies have been expanding their presence with lower-priced electric and hybrid vehicles.
JLR's latest changes come after its revenue fell nearly 10% in its most recent quarter. Its pretax profit also dropped 69% to £109 million.
