As per PTI report, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has postponed a hearing concerning Vedanta Ltd’s challenge to the bid submitted by Adani Enterprises for Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL). This delay is attributed to changes in the tribunal's composition.

NCLAT's Decision to Adjourn

On April 13, 2026, NCLAT adjourned its hearing regarding the ₹14,535-crore bid by Adani Enterprises for JAL. This adjournment was necessitated by a modification in the tribunal's bench composition.

A member's unavailability triggered the need for this change, which in turn delayed the hearing of Vedanta's appeals against Adani's bid selection.

Previous Tribunal Judgements

Vedanta had earlier lodged two petitions contesting the Allahabad bench's decision of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The March 17 order had approved Adani's substantial bid to acquire JAL.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, no interim stay has been granted by NCLAT on the earlier NCLT ruling, thereby allowing Adani's acquisition plan to proceed, although it remains subject to the appeal outcomes.

Supreme Court's Role in the Dispute

Pursuantly, this matter reached the Supreme Court. The apex court also declined to provide a stay on the NCLT's approval of Adani's acquisition plan.

However, it did impose a condition that any significant policy action by the monitoring committee should seek the Tribunal's approval first.

Impact and Next Steps

This adjournment brings additional uncertainty to the ongoing corporate bidding struggle surrounding JAL between Vedanta and Adani.

While NCLAT is yet to announce the next hearing's date, this legal battle remains a critical focus for all parties involved and for stakeholders monitoring the unfolding events in the corporate and financial arenas.

Conclusion

The NCLAT's decision to adjourn the case highlights procedural necessities stemming from bench composition changes. While Vedanta continues its challenge against Adani's acquisition bid for JAL, the ultimate outcome remains pending, contingent upon future tribunal hearings.
