The government has launched 21 advanced biomanufacturing hubs across the country, as per the reports. These facilities will provide shared infrastructure for startups, companies, and academic institutions working in the biotechnology sector.

The initiative has been introduced under the BioE3 Policy, Biotechnology for Environment, Economy and Employment.

Scope of Work

The hubs will support pilot- and pre-commercial-scale technologies. Focus areas include microbial biomanufacturing, smart proteins, sustainable agriculture, functional foods, bio-based chemicals, and next-generation cell and gene therapies. The centres are expected to reduce import dependence and aid in the development of clean and green technologies.

Industry and Academic Collaboration

Several facilities are being set up through partnerships between industry and academia. In Bengaluru, the Foundation for Science Innovation and Development, along with Tata Chemicals, is working on scaling speciality chemicals and enzymes. Immunoadoptive Cell Therapy Pvt. Ltd. in Mumbai is creating a facility for gene delivery vectors. Hi Tech Biosciences India Ltd. in Pune is establishing a fermentation unit for drug intermediates, while Embio Ltd. in Mumbai is developing large-scale fermenters.

National Network

The government described the hubs as High-Performance Biomanufacturing Platforms. They will include biofoundries, which use automation to design, construct, and test biological systems at scale. The Department of Biotechnology and the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) will oversee the network, intended to serve as a common platform for institutions and industries.

Bioeconomy Growth

As per news reports, India’s bioeconomy has expanded from about $10 billion to nearly $100 billion in recent years, with a target of $300 billion in the coming years. The number of biotech startups has also grown, with more than 13,000 now operating in the country. Nearly 100 incubators support these ventures under BIRAC.

Conclusion

The launch of 21 advanced biomanufacturing hubs adds national infrastructure for biotechnology research and scale-up. The facilities are to help translate scientific work into market-ready solutions and support India’s broader bioeconomy targets.
