Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said nearly 40 lakh women beneficiaries under the Orunodoi scheme will receive ₹9,000 each on March 10, 2026, as per PTI reports. The amount will be transferred directly to bank accounts through a single-day direct benefit transfer.
The Chief Minister said the total outlay for the transfer will be around ₹3,600 crore. According to the state government, this is expected to be one of the largest single-day transfers carried out under a welfare programme in Assam.
The ₹9,000 payment includes assistance for 4 months beginning January 2026. The transfer will also include an additional amount linked to Bohag Bihu, the Assamese New Year festival observed in mid-April.
Under the Orunodoi scheme, eligible women receive ₹1,250 per month. The programme provides financial assistance to low-income households, with the payment routed directly to women beneficiaries through bank accounts.
Sarma shared details of the upcoming payment during a Facebook Live session on Sunday, marking International Women’s Day. He said the transfer would begin at around 10.30 am on March 10, 2026.
Local-level meetings are also expected to be organised across districts on the same day. Beneficiary families have been invited to attend these gatherings organised by local administrations.
The Orunodoi scheme currently covers nearly 4 million families in the state. The programme was introduced to provide monthly financial assistance to households identified under specific income and eligibility criteria.
As per reports, the scheme uses direct benefit transfers to reduce delays and ensure the funds reach beneficiaries without intermediaries. The payment is credited directly into bank accounts linked to the beneficiaries.
Government data shows that several programmes targeting women have been implemented in Assam in recent years. Over 5.9 million tap water connections and more than 5.1 million LPG connections under the Ujjwala scheme have been provided in the state.
In addition, more than 5.5 lakh women have reportedly become “Lakhpati Didis”, while over 900 women-led startups have been set up. Around 56,000 Anganwadi workers have also received training.
The ₹3,600 crore transfer scheduled for March 10 will credit payments to nearly 40 lakh women beneficiaries under the Orunodoi scheme through a direct bank transfer across Assam.
