The Punjab government has announced a monthly financial allowance for women as part of its 2026-27 state budget. Under the Mukh Mantri Mawan Dhian Satikar Yojna, eligible adult women will receive ₹1,000 per month, while women from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community will receive ₹1,500.
The amount will be transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts. The scheme carries an allocation of ₹9,300 crore, with the state aiming to cover about 97% of adult women in Punjab.
Registration for the programme is expected to begin on April 13, 2026 (Baisakhi).
The proposal was announced by finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema while presenting the state’s ₹2,60,437 crore budget for the financial year 2026-27. The budget was titled “Saari Guarantiyan Puri Karan Wala Budget” and marked the 5th budget of the current administration.
It was also the first time the Punjab Vidhan Sabha presented a budget on a Sunday. The announcement coincided with International Women’s Day, and women visitors were present in the assembly during the proceedings.
Women already receiving old-age, widow or disability pensions will also be eligible for the monthly allowance. However, income taxpayers, present or former government employees, and current or former MPs and MLAs will not qualify.
Punjab’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is estimated at ₹7,891,487 crore for 2025-26. For 2026-27, the government has projected the GSDP to reach ₹9,80,635 crore, showing an expected 10% growth.
Despite the growth projection, the state’s debt is expected to rise. Outstanding liabilities are projected to reach ₹4,47,754 crore by March 31, 2027, compared with ₹4,07,784 crore estimated for the current year.
The fiscal deficit has been projected at 4.08% of GSDP, while the effective revenue deficit is estimated at 2.06%.
The budget has also outlined spending across several sectors. Education has been allocated ₹19,279 crore, an increase of around 7% from the previous year.
Healthcare spending has been raised to ₹6,879 crore, including ₹2,000 crore for the Mukhya Mantri Sehat Yojna, which provides ₹10 lakh in annual cashless health insurance per family. The state also plans to establish 143 new Aam Aadmi Clinics.
