The Department of Rural Development is formulating a strategy to create 6 crore Lakhpati Didis across India. The initiative focuses on enhancing income-generating opportunities for women linked to Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
The plan was reviewed in a meeting chaired by Rural Development Secretary Rohit Kansal. Senior officials from the department and the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) participated in the discussions.
The Lakhpati Didi initiative aims to increase the annual income of rural women to at least ₹1 lakh. It focuses on strengthening livelihoods through enterprise development, financial inclusion, and skill-building.
The programme targets women associated with SHGs under the DAY-NRLM framework. The broader goal is to transform SHG members into financially independent entrepreneurs.
The strategy prioritises building a strong marketing ecosystem for SHG-led products. It includes initiatives such as community-owned retail systems and digital commerce platforms.
The government also plans to create a unified national marketing identity to improve product visibility. These measures aim to move women beyond subsistence activities into professionally managed enterprises.
The programme proposes a range of infrastructure initiatives to strengthen market access for self-help group products across the country. These include the establishment of 700 SHE-MARTs in commercially viable locations, 1,000 District Fulfilment Centres, Centres of Excellence for product development and stronger State-Level Federations. The measures are intended to improve supply-chain efficiency and create more reliable sales channels for SHG enterprises. By enhancing production, distribution and retail capabilities, the initiative aims to support scalability and expand market reach.
The department plans to launch a Producer Group App to improve digital integration. Efforts are also underway to address delays in loan processing through the Jan Samarth Portal.
The Secretary emphasised raising awareness among banks about credit-linked schemes under DAY-NRLM. These steps are intended to improve access to finance and streamline financial inclusion for rural entrepreneurs.

The government’s strategy reflects a multi-dimensional approach to empowering SHG women across India. It combines infrastructure development, digital integration, and financial support to drive income growth.
Initiatives such as SHE-MARTs, fulfilment centres, and branding are expected to enhance market access significantly. The focus on recognition programmes and capacity building further strengthens the ecosystem. Overall, the plan aims to create sustainable, scalable opportunities for rural women entrepreneurs.
