The West Bengal government on Wednesday launched the Annapurna Yojana, under which eligible women will receive ₹3,000 per month through direct bank transfers, according to PTI reports. The scheme was inaugurated by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nabanna.

The launch programme was connected virtually to blocks, municipalities, and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area. Local administrations were asked to make arrangements for the implementation of the scheme.

Over 28 Lakh Women Registered

According to the state government, 28,25,769 women have been verified and enrolled under the scheme so far. The registrations were completed through a dedicated portal over the last 3 days.

Reports suggest the exercise involved district administrations, block development offices, municipalities, and elected representatives. The names were added to the list after the verification process was completed.

₹3,000 to Be Transferred Monthly

Women covered under the scheme will receive ₹3,000 every month in their bank accounts. The transfer process began after the inauguration of the programme.

The state government said applications would continue to be accepted. Women whose applications are verified in the coming months will also be included under the scheme.

Eligibility and Registration Window

Women aged between 25 and 60 years are eligible to apply for assistance under Annapurna Yojana. The government has provided a 90-day period for registration.

Approval letters were distributed to selected applicants during programmes held across blocks, municipalities and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area on Wednesday.

Replaces Existing Welfare Programme

The Annapurna Yojana has replaced the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, which was introduced by the previous Trinamool Congress government.

Under that programme, around 2.42 crore women received financial assistance of up to ₹1,500 per month.
