Vedanta Aluminium has expanded the alumina refining capacity of its Lanjigarh plant in Odisha’s Kalahandi district to 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), from 2 MTPA earlier.
The company said the expanded capacity is now in operation. The Lanjigarh refinery has been undergoing expansion since 2020, with work carried out in phases.
The refinery converts bauxite into alumina, a key input used in aluminium production. Lanjigarh is one of Vedanta Aluminium’s main refining units and supplies alumina to its smelting facilities.
Following the expansion at Lanjigarh, India’s total alumina refining capacity is estimated at close to 13 MTPA. The company stated that this level places India as the third-largest alumina producer globally in terms of installed capacity.
Alumina production is a critical link in the aluminium supply chain. Higher domestic refining capacity helps meet demand from local smelters and reduces the need for imported material.
Vedanta Aluminium said the Lanjigarh refinery achieved its highest-ever monthly alumina production in November. Output during the month stood at 254 kilotonnes (KT). This was 8 per cent higher than the previous month and 68 per cent higher compared with the same period last year.
The company attributed the increase to the ramp-up of operations following the commissioning of the additional capacity. November’s figures show improved utilisation of the refinery after expansion.
As per news reports, Rajiv Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, said the expansion marked a capacity milestone for the refinery. He added that recent production levels show progress in stabilising operations at the expanded facility.
No details were provided on the investment involved in the project or future capacity additions at Lanjigarh.

As of December 18, 2025, 10:08 am, Vedanta Ltd share price was trading at ₹570.80, a 0.18% increase from the previous closing price.
The completion of the Lanjigarh expansion raises Vedanta Aluminium’s refining capacity and adds to India’s overall alumina output. With the refinery now operating at a higher scale, production levels are to remain above earlier capacity limits.
