LTIMindtree will stop filing new H-1B visa applications soon, as per CEO Venu Lambu. The shift comes at a time when Indian IT companies are seeing fewer approvals for first-time petitions in the US, and most now rely heavily on existing visa holders already working onsite.
Figures from the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP), using USCIS data, show that the top seven Indian IT firms received 4,573 approvals for initial H-1B employment in FY2025.
This is 70% lower than 2015 and 37% below FY2024. Only 3 India-headquartered companies feature among the top 25 employers for new petitions. Meanwhile, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Google occupied the top four positions for initial approvals.
TCS is the only Indian IT company among the top 5 employers for both fresh and continuing H-1B approvals.
It received 846 new approvals this year, compared with 1,452 in 2024. For continuing employment, TCS secured 5,293 approvals, though its rejection rate for extensions rose to 7%, higher than the overall USCIS rate of 1.9%.
Rejection rates for initial petitions rose across the sector in FY2025. TCS reported a 2% denial rate, while HCL America stood at 6%, LTIMindtree at 5%, and Capgemini at 4%.
Continuing-employment petitions saw far fewer rejections, with Infosys, Wipro and LTIMindtree recording between 1% and 2%. Most firms appear to be focusing on maintaining current workers rather than securing new visas.
Approvals for labour certifications in the “software engineer” category have continued to fall. Data from H1BGrader shows certifications declined from 40,378 in 2022 to 23,922 through Q3 2025, pointing to reduced clearances even before visa applications reach USCIS.
USCIS data for FY2024 indicates an average salary of $136,000 and a median of $125,000 for H-1B workers in computer-related jobs. Around 63% of approved applicants held a master’s degree or higher.

LTIMindtree Share Price Performance

With new approvals slowing and rejection rates rising, Indian IT companies are reassessing their overseas hiring strategies. Reports suggest that LTIMindtree’s decision aligns with a broader trend of relying on existing visa holders rather than filing fresh H-1B applications.
