IndiGo has welcomed India’s first A321 XLR aircraft in Delhi, marking a new chapter in the airline’s international expansion. The aircraft is designed for long-haul routes, allowing IndiGo to reach destinations that were previously beyond the range of narrow-body planes.

With this addition, IndiGo is entering medium- and long-haul markets while continuing to dominate domestic and short-haul international travel.

A321 XLR: What Sets It Apart?

The A321 XLR can fly up to 4,700 nautical miles with a seating capacity of 244 passengers. It can operate flights lasting up to 11 hours, making it ideal for international routes that require both range and efficiency.

Passengers can enjoy a full long-haul experience, including wider economy seats, full flat business class seats, and modern in-flight entertainment and connectivity. The aircraft also offers flexibility for airlines to operate routes during off-peak times or adjust for seasonal demand.

Globally, the A321 XLR has been used on routes connecting cities like Paris, Kuala Lumpur, and Dallas, highlighting its capability to serve international markets efficiently.

IndiGo’s International Expansion Plans

IndiGo began long-haul operations earlier this year with direct flights between Mumbai and Manchester using leased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The airline is now set to operate its first A321 XLR flight from Mumbai to Athens on 23 January 2026, making it the only Indian carrier to offer direct flights to Greece.

In addition, IndiGo has doubled its Airbus A350-900 widebody order from 30 to 60 aircraft, showing its commitment to growing its international footprint. With over 400 aircraft in service and nearly 900 on order (including A320NEO, A321NEO, and A321XLR models) the airline is well-positioned to expand both domestically and globally.

Conclusion
