The government has asked IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa to provide data on average fares charged during early December. This follows widespread travel disruptions caused mainly by IndiGo cancelling thousands of flights due to a shortage of pilots.

IndiGo, which holds around 65% of the Indian aviation market, cancelled nearly 4,500 flights in December. This stranded thousands of passengers and caused major disruption to air travel across the country.

Fare Surges and Government Response

During the disruption, fares of some airlines rose sharply. The government responded by temporarily capping ticket prices to protect passengers.

To assess the situation more closely, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked the airlines to submit average fare data for economy and premium economy seats on each route from December 1 to 15. Airlines have also been asked to provide information on fares for “affected routes” specifically impacted by cancellations.

Competition Commission Review

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is reviewing whether IndiGo abused its dominant market position. One complaint under consideration alleges that IndiGo cancelled flights and later offered seats at much higher prices.

The requested data will help authorities understand airfare patterns across different airlines during the disruptions. There is currently no indication that the investigation will be extended to other airlines beyond the four asked to provide data.

Conclusion

The government and regulatory authorities are closely examining the December travel chaos to ensure fair pricing and prevent abuse of market power. Data collected from the airlines will help determine if any airline exploited the disruptions to charge higher fares and if further action is needed.
