The Indian Air Force (IAF) has confirmed the tragic crash of its Tejas fighter jet during a flight display at the Dubai Air Show on November 21, 2025. The mishap led to the pilot’s death, prompting the IAF to initiate a court of inquiry to ascertain the cause of the accident. The incident marks a rare but fatal setback for India’s indigenous fighter programme.

Tejas Jet Crashes Mid-Display at Dubai Air Show

On November 21, 2025, an Indian Air Force Tejas aircraft plunged to the ground in flames during a flying demonstration at the Dubai Air Show, held at Al Maktoum International Airport. The pilot sustained fatal injuries despite swift emergency responses at the site. The IAF publicly expressed regret over the loss and confirmed that a detailed inquiry is underway to identify the cause.

Television visuals captured the jet losing altitude before impact, raising questions over possible technical malfunctions or piloting issues. GE Aerospace, whose engines equip the Tejas fleet, has also offered support in the investigation.

Background and Capabilities of Tejas Fighter Jet

Tejas is a 4.5-generation, single-engine multi-role combat aircraft developed indigenously by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). It is versatile, capable of air and ground support missions in both land and maritime warfare. The aircraft is available in multiple variants including single-seat fighters and twin-seat trainers for both the Air Force and Navy.

The LCA Mk1A, the latest variant, includes upgrades such as AESA radar, modern electronic warfare suite, and smart displays to enhance combat efficiency and survivability.

Previous Incident and IAF Investments in Tejas

In March 2024, a similar Tejas aircraft crashed near Jaisalmer during return from Exercise Bharat Shakti, though the pilot ejected safely. That accident marked the first since the jet was inducted in 2001. In February 2021, the Defence Ministry signed a ₹48,000 crore deal to procure 83 Mk1A variants, with preliminary approval in November 2023 to add 97 more units.

Conclusion

The unfortunate crash of the Tejas jet during the Dubai Air Show brings focus back to aircraft safety protocols and mechanical reliability. As investigations continue, the IAF and HAL remain committed to understanding the cause and improving operational safety.
