Bharti Airtel Limited has announced a $1 Billion investment in its subsidiary, Nxtra Data Limited, alongside Alpha Wave Global, Carlyle and Anchorage Capital. As per the exchange filing dated March 30, 2026, the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and standard closing conditions.
Nxtra operates in the data centre segment and will use the funds to expand capacity and infrastructure across India.
Alpha Wave Global will invest $435 million, while Carlyle has committed $240 million and Anchorage Capital $35 million. Airtel will invest about $290 million through its wholly owned subsidiary.
Following the transaction, Nxtra is to be valued at around $3.1 billion. Airtel will retain a controlling stake, with final shareholding to be determined after closing adjustments.
The investment will be made in cash and has received approval from Airtel’s special committee of directors.
Nxtra currently runs 14 core data centres and more than 120 edge facilities across the country. Its installed capacity stands at about 300 MW.
The company plans to scale this to 1 GW over the next few years. It is also targeting a market share of around 25% in the domestic data centre segment.
Facilities are being developed in cities including Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
Nxtra provides co-location, cloud infrastructure, managed hosting, disaster recovery, and edge computing services. It has also integrated artificial intelligence into operations for functions such as maintenance and energy management.
The company has partnered with Google to build a large-scale AI-focused data centre campus, supported by a planned investment of $15 billion.
India’s data centre market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of about 21% between 2024 and 2030, reaching nearly 3,400 MW of IT capacity.
The expansion is linked to higher cloud usage, enterprise digitisation and demand from large technology firms.
