EPFO New Rules: Are Weekly Offs Between Jobs Considered Service Break for Insurance Eligibility?

EPFO clarifies that weekly offs and holidays between EPF-covered jobs won’t break EDLI insurance eligibility, ensuring uninterrupted social security.

Under the latest clarification issued by the EPFO, weekly offs and declared holidays falling between two EPF-covered jobs are not treated as a break in service for insurance eligibility under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) Scheme.

This update directly benefits employees and their families by removing ambiguity around what counts as “continuous service” while settling EDLI death claims.

Why Did EPFO Clarify This Rule?

EPFO noticed several cases where minor gaps (such as Saturdays and Sundays) were incorrectly treated as service breaks, leading to rejection or reduction of EDLI claims.

In one such case, an employee with over 12 months of cumulative service across EPF-covered organisations was denied EDLI benefits only because a weekend fell between the exit date of one job and the joining date of another.

To prevent such unfair outcomes, EPFO issued a circular on December 17, 2025, standardising how “continuous service” should be interpreted.

What Qualifies as Continuous Service as per EPFO Now?

As per the new clarification, service will be treated as continuous if the gap between two EPF-covered jobs consists only of:

  • Saturdays and Sundays
  • Declared weekly offs
  • National holidays
  • Gazetted holidays
  • State holidays
  • Restricted holidays

Simple Example for Employees

  • Exit date from previous job: Friday
  • Joining date at new EPF-covered job: Monday

The days of Saturday and Sunday in between will not be counted as a service break. Their eligibility for obtaining EDLI insurance will remain fully intact.

Other EPFO Changes That Strengthen EDLI Protection

EPFO has also introduced several employee-friendly measures:

  • Minimum EDLI benefit has been raised to ₹50,000 when employees’ service is under 12 months and the average PF balance is below ₹50,000.
  • EDLI coverage has been extended up to 6 months after the last PF contribution
If the employee passes away within 6 months and was still on the employer’s rolls, dependents remain eligible.
  • Employees changing multiple EPF-covered jobs can still qualify as being in continuous service. A gap of up to 60 days is allowed for switching between multiple jobs.

Conclusion

Under the new EPFO rules, weekly offs and holidays between jobs do NOT count as a service break for EDLI insurance eligibility. This clarification protects employees’ families from unjust claim rejections and ensures social security coverage is not disrupted during genuine job transitions.
