Following the August 31, 2026, income-tax return deadline, September's tax calendar includes separate compliance dates for different categories of taxpayers, as per a Business Standard news report.

The month includes deadlines for depositing TDS and TCS, paying advance tax, and furnishing tax audit reports. The dates are not applicable to every taxpayer.

Requirements depend on the nature of income, business activity, and whether accounts are subject to audit.

September 7: TDS and TCS Deposit

Tax deducted or collected during August 2026 must generally be deposited with the central government by September 7, 2026. The deadline applies to employers, businesses, and other entities responsible for deducting TDS or collecting TCS.

Separate rules apply to certain government offices, where payment may be required on the same day in specified cases. Certain declarations received during August are also required to be uploaded by the relevant date.

September 14: TDS Certificates

September 14, 2026, is the deadline for issuing the prescribed TDS certificate, Form 132, for tax deducted during July 2026. The certificate records the tax deducted and is used by taxpayers while checking their tax details.

Any difference between the amount shown in the certificate and the taxpayer's records may require reconciliation before further tax filings are made.

September 15: Second Advance Tax Payment

The second instalment of advance tax for Tax Year 2026-27 is due on September 15, 2026. Taxpayers under the regular payment schedule are required to pay at least 45% of their estimated annual tax liability cumulatively by this date.

The advance tax schedule requires 15% by June 15, 45% by September 15, 75% by December 15 and 100% by March 15. Shortfalls in the prescribed instalments can attract interest under applicable provisions.

September 30: Tax Audit Reports

September 30, 2026, is the deadline for furnishing tax audit reports for Assessment Year 2026-27 in cases where the audited income-tax return is due on October 31. This may apply to companies and eligible non-corporate taxpayers based on turnover, receipts and other conditions.

The date also covers certain challan-cum-statements and audit reports from eligible trusts, funds, hospitals, universities and educational or medical institutions required to furnish Form 10B or Form 10BB.

Conclusion

September's tax calendar covers separate obligations rather than a single filing requirement.

Taxpayers with TDS, advance tax, audit or institutional reporting obligations need to follow the dates applicable to their category and retain the relevant certificates, challans and filing acknowledgements.
