The Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2020-21 Series XII is set to yield substantial returns with a redemption price of ₹15,355 per unit, reflecting an approximate 233% gain over its issue price for investors opting for premature redemption on September 9, 2026.

Redemption Price and Calculation Method

As announced by the Reserve Bank of India, the redemption price for SGB 2020-21 Series XII has been set at ₹15,355 per unit.

This price determination is based on the average closing gold prices for the 3 business days immediately prior to September 9, 2026. The India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd provided these prices based on gold of 999 purity.

Issued at ₹4,612 per gram for online transactions, bondholders can expect a return of 233% with the new redemption price. The offline issue price was ₹4,662 per gram.

The absolute return is calculated as follows: \((₹15,355 - ₹4,612) / ₹4,612 \times 100\), yielding approximately 233%.

Impact of Taxation on Redemption

Under recent tax rule changes effective from April 1, 2026, capital gains from premature SGB redemptions are now taxable. The capital gains tax exemption applies only to bonds held until maturity. This means individuals purchasing the bonds from the secondary market are not eligible for tax-free redemption.

Investment and Return Calculation

If you had invested ₹1,00,000 at the issuance, that investment would be worth approximately ₹3,33,000 as of the redemption date, excluding the 2.5% annual interest paid on the initial investment. This calculation highlights the lucrative returns linked with this specific SGB tranche.

Conclusion

The SGB 2020-21 Series XII set under the price of ₹15,355 per gram for premature redemption ensures investors realise a 233% return from a ₹4,612 issue price. Tax implications affect only those redeeming prematurely, as capital gains are now taxable.
