The Uttar Pradesh government has increased Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees from 58% to 60% of basic pay, as per news reports. The decision was issued through an order by Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Deepak Kumar.

The revision will apply to serving employees as well as pensioners covered under the state government system. The increase comes as part of the revision carried out to adjust salaries against inflation.

Relief for Employees and Pensioners

Dearness Allowance is an additional amount paid over basic salary to help employees manage rising living costs. Pensioners receive a similar benefit in the form of Dearness Relief.

Since DA is linked to basic pay, the increase in monthly income will vary across different pay grades. Employees with higher basic salaries will see a larger increase in absolute terms compared to lower pay bands.

State Expenditure Likely to Rise

Uttar Pradesh has one of the country’s largest state government employees and pensioner bases. As a result, even a small increase in DA adds significantly to the government’s expenditure.

Officials have not shared the estimated financial impact of the latest revision. However, DA hikes for large states generally involve an additional annual outgo running into hundreds of crores of rupees.

Revision Follows Central Government Move

State governments usually revise DA after the Centre announces changes for central government employees. Earlier, the central government had approved a similar increase in Dearness Allowance for its staff.

After the Centre’s decision, states such as Bihar, Odisha and Tamil Nadu also revised DA rates for their employees. Uttar Pradesh has now followed the same pattern.

Further Details Yet to Be Released

The government order confirmed the revised DA rate at 60% of basic pay. However, information regarding the effective date and payment of arrears has not yet been made public.

DA revisions are generally announced twice a year and are linked to inflation trends and movements in consumer prices. The latest increase will reflect in salary and pension calculations once implemented.
