Vehicle owners in Uttar Pradesh have received a big relief as the state transport department announced the cancellation of non tax e-challans issued between 2017 and 2021.
The decision, aimed at clearing long pending challans, will see all such cases digitally marked as disposed of or abated, bringing clarity and closure to lakhs of pending cases.
The move follows directions issued by the Committee on Subordinate Legislation (Vidhan Sabha) on August 29, 2025. Acting on this, the department has started abatement or disposal of challans from the specified period that were pending before courts. Within a month, these challans will be updated on the transport portal as disposed of.
Challans dated January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2021 that were never forwarded to courts and have become non-prosecutable due to time limitations under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita are being closed administratively. However, tax recovery challans are excluded from this policy.
Of these, 14,86,143 challans were sent to courts, where 10,84,732 remain pending and 4,01,411 were settled. At the office level, 2,38,955 challans were never sent to courts, with 1,29,163 still pending. All such challans will now be digitally disposed of within the stipulated timeline, as per The Times of India report
