Thane city traffic police launched the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on Sep 1, 2025. In its first week, the AI-driven system issued over 3,000 e-challans, aiming to reduce violations and enhance road safety.

AI Driven Traffic Monitoring in Thane

The Thane Traffic Police have rolled out the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) to monitor traffic violations and streamline enforcement. Within its first week of operation, ITMS generated more than 3,000 e-challans, according to Pankaj Shirsat, DCP Traffic.

The AI-powered system operates 24/7 using high-definition cameras to automatically detect offenses such as signal jumping, riding without helmets, triple-seat riding, lane cutting, and other traffic violations.

Captured violations are transmitted to the central control room, where they are processed and linked to vehicle owners via the registration database before issuing challans.

Camera Network and Expansion Plans

In the first phase, 12 advanced cameras have been installed at key junctions including Cadbury Junction, Teen Hath Naka, Majiwada, Kapurbawdi, Anand Nagar, Ovala, Anjur Phata, Kalyan Naka, and Dighe Chowk.

Officials have confirmed plans to scale up the system to 350 cameras across the city in the coming months, as per The Times of India report.

Benefits of ITMS

This ensures greater transparency in enforcement and minimises disputes during on ground checks.

Apart from law enforcement, ITMS provides real time traffic monitoring, congestion mapping, and long term planning support.

Improving Road Safety

Thane has historically faced high rates of traffic violations, contributing to congestion and accidents. Officials believe ITMS will not only improve compliance but also enhance overall road safety and traffic efficiency, providing a model for technology driven traffic management in other cities.

Conclusion

The launch of Thane’s Intelligent Traffic Management System marks a significant step toward leveraging technology for traffic enforcement and road safety. While the system has already issued over 3,000 e-challans in its first week, its long term impact on reducing violations, improving traffic flow, and enhancing overall road safety will depend on consistent monitoring, public compliance, and expansion of the camera network across the city.
