Tata Group backed Air India Ltd has expanded its narrowbody fleet plans after placing a fresh order for additional Boeing aircraft, reinforcing its long-term network growth and fleet modernisation strategy.
The airline ordered 30 Boeing 737 MAX jets, comprising 20, 737-8 aircraft finalised this month and 10, 737-10 aircraft that were previously listed as unidentified on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website.
Both transactions were executed by exercising existing purchase options, increasing Air India’s total Boeing order book to nearly 200 aircraft across single-aisle and widebody categories.
As per press release, Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said, “This additional order for 30 Boeing 737 aircraft is part of our broader fleet strategy to position Air India firmly for the future, as a world-class global carrier that India deserves and the world expects.”
The airline plans to deploy the 737-8 aircraft on high-frequency domestic and short-haul regional routes, using their fuel efficiency and operational flexibility. The larger 737-10 aircraft are expected to support capacity growth while maintaining commonality within Air India’s single-aisle fleet and achieving the lowest cost per seat in the category.
Boeing said the order reflects continued performance of Air India’s existing 737-8 fleet. Paul Righi, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Eurasia, India and South Asia, said, “Air India's order for more 737 MAX jets underscores the strong performance of their existing 737-8 fleet as they continue to expand connectivity across India and the South Asia region.”
Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook projects that India and the South Asian region will require nearly 3,300 new aircraft over the next two decades, with around 90% of demand expected to be for single-aisle jets such as the 737 MAX.
