Reliance Jio has reached a significant milestone in its satellite endeavours, obtaining technical approval from India's space regulator, IN-SPACe. This approval supports Jio's ambitious plan to deploy around 1,600 low earth orbit satellites as per The Economic Times news report.

Reliance Jio's Satellite Milestone

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has deemed Reliance Jio's proposal to establish approximately 1,600 low earth orbit satellites as technologically competent, stating parallels with global systems such as Starlink.

The evaluation included inputs from the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Wireless Planning and Coordination wing of the Department of Telecommunications. This serves as a crucial step toward support for securing international orbital slots.

Enhanced National Capabilities

This initiative intends to offer a substantial data capacity, potentially exceeding current global systems, and aims to reinforce national security while reducing reliance on foreign satellites. Jio's plan includes providing 4.5-5 terabits per second (Tbps) throughput across India.

In comparison, Starlink has a 600 gigabit per second (Gbps) approval, and Amazon Leo aspires for 3 Tbps, though it is yet to receive authorisation from IN-SPACe.

Strategic Developments and Future Prospects

Jio's constellation is devised to allow coexistence with future Indian constellations. Provisions in the proposal accommodate fixed satellite services such as broadband and cellular backhaul, and mobile satellite services like direct-to-device connectivity.

The firm plans to install 20-22 ground stations. Discussions have been initiated to explore defence payload hosting possibilities on some satellites. The space regulator emphasises offering regulatory assistance to enable India to create its first homegrown, non-geostationary satellite constellation.

Conclusion

India's approval of Reliance Jio's 1,600 LEO satellite project marks progress in establishing a homegrown constellation. By proposing 4.5-5 Tbps data throughput and planning for ground infrastructure, Jio aims to enhance national requirements and satellite independence.
