The Navi Mumbai International Airport will be inaugurated on October 8, 2025. Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani confirmed the date on October 1, 2025. The airport recently received its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), completing a key regulatory requirement before starting operations.

Project Stakeholders

The airport is being developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), a joint venture company. Adani Group holds a 74% stake in NMIAL, while the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) owns 26%. The development has been structured into five phases.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

Once fully developed, the airport will have the capacity to handle 90 million passengers annually and 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo. The first phase of the project will serve around 20 million passengers each year. It will function as the second major airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Location and Infrastructure

Reports suggest that the airport includes a 3,700-metre runway, new passenger terminals, and advanced air traffic control systems to accommodate large aircraft. It is located 14 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), 22 km from Taloja Industrial Area, 32 km from Thane, and 40 km from Bhiwandi. The location is expected to improve connectivity for both passenger travel and cargo movement.

Workforce Involvement

Ahead of the launch, Adani visited the site and met with construction workers, engineers, women staff, firefighters, and security personnel who contributed to the project. A video of his visit was shared, highlighting the involvement of different teams in building the airport.

National Context

According to data from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, India has 162 operational airports. The addition of Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to ease the pressure on Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which is currently operating at high capacity.
