Air India and Airbus have jointly set up a pilot training centre in Gurugram, Haryana. The facility is located at the Air India Aviation Training Academy and covers 12,000 square metres. As per the news report, it has been developed as a 50:50 joint venture between the 2 companies.

Simulators and Infrastructure

The centre is planned to house 10 full-flight simulators. Currently, two A320 simulators are operational. Six more A320 simulators and two A350 simulators will be installed in phases. The overall investment in the simulator infrastructure is over ₹1,000 crore.

Training Capacity

Air India said the Gurugram facility is expected to train more than 5,000 new pilots over the next decade. The training will be focused on the A320 and A350 family aircraft. The airline added that the centre will consolidate its pilot training resources in one location.

Inauguration

The training centre was inaugurated on Tuesday by Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu. The minister said the facility will also include India’s first A350 simulators. Airbus Board Chairman Rene Obermann and Air India CEO Campbell Wilson were present at the event.

Expansion Plans

Air India has ordered 570 new aircraft, including both Airbus and Boeing models. To support this expansion, the airline is also setting up a Flying Training Organisation in Amravati, Maharashtra, which will aim to graduate 180 commercial pilots each year.

Wider Training Network

The Gurugram centre will operate alongside the Airbus India Training Centre in Delhi, which currently has four A320 simulators. Together, the two hubs will provide a total of 14 simulators. Airbus has also partnered with local organisations to provide training for maintenance engineers and technicians.

Maintenance Training

A Basic Maintenance Training Organisation is also planned near Air India’s new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facility in Bengaluru, expected to be operational in FY27. The BMTO will run a two-year Aircraft Maintenance Engineering programme followed by two years of practical training.
