Reliance Jio, a key player in India’s telecom sector, has withdrawn its ₹799 prepaid plan offering 1.5GB daily data over 84 days, as per news reports. The move comes shortly after ending its entry-level 1GB/day plan. A new ₹899 plan featuring similar data benefits and added JioSaavn Pro has now been introduced.

Jio Ends ₹799 Prepaid Plan Amid Tariff Restructuring

As of August 20, 2025, Reliance Jio has scrapped its ₹799 prepaid plan that included 1.5GB daily data, unlimited voice calls, 100 SMS per day, and access to Jio apps with an 84-day validity. This plan has been removed from Jio’s official recharge listings and website, indicating a shift in data pack offerings.

New ₹899 Plan with JioSaavn Pro Launched

Replacing the older plan, Jio now offers a ₹899 plan that retains the same data caps and validity as the cancelled ₹799 pack. However, it comes bundled with a premium subscription to JioSaavn Pro. Users receive uninterrupted music streaming, ad-free access and offline downloads through this added benefit.

Sector-Wide Shifts in Tariff Structures

This development follows a series of revisions by telecom companies. Earlier in the same week, Jio discontinued its ₹249 plan offering 1GB/day for 28 days. Similarly, competitor Bharti Airtel revised its own recharge rates, raising the price of the ₹249 pack to ₹299, setting higher entry points for data-centric prepaid plans.

Impact on Subscriber Metrics and Market Dynamics

Despite these changes, Jio continued to grow in user base, adding 19 lakh wireless subscribers in June 2025, according to TRAI data. Jio led the market with 46.44 crore active subscribers, with 97.37% of its total user base classified as active. Airtel followed with 38.80 crore active users, while Vodafone Idea and BSNL saw further declines in their numbers.

Conclusion

Reliance Jio’s discontinuation of its ₹799 plan and the introduction of the upgraded ₹899 pack with JioSaavn Pro reflect the changing dynamics in India’s telecom market. These moves signify an industry-wide trend of aligning tariffs with enhanced content offerings and monetisation strategies, while responding to revised market conditions and user expectations.
