As per news reports, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. is expected to sign 2 major submarine deals worth over ₹1 lakh crore by mid-2026. These deals are aimed at strengthening India’s naval power.
The first deal is with France’s Naval Group and is worth ₹36,000 crore. This agreement is for the construction of three Scorpene submarines, which will be built in India with French support. This project is not entirely new; it is a follow-on order, as Mazagon Dock has already built 6 Scorpene submarines earlier under a similar program.
The second and larger deal, valued at ₹65,000 crore, is with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). This is a completely new initiative under Project 75-India (P75-I) and involves the building of six diesel-electric stealth submarines. This project is one of the biggest under the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ defence initiative.
Although both projects were approved by the Ministry of Defence, they have been delayed due to ongoing technical and commercial negotiations. As per news reports, cost negotiations are expected to begin soon and may take 6 to 9 months. If everything goes as planned, both contracts could be signed by mid-2026.
The Indian Navy is pushing for quick finalisation of these deals to boost its underwater combat strength. Delivery of the submarines is expected to begin around 6 years after the contracts are signed, meaning by the early 2030s.
The Scorpene project is likely to be finalised earlier, as it has already faced several delays. The Navy hopes there won’t be any further setbacks.
When asked if Mazagon Dock can manage both large projects at the same time, sources said it is up to the shipbuilder to increase its infrastructure and capacity. The company may need to expand or upgrade its facilities to meet the demands of building nine submarines in total.

India’s efforts to strengthen its naval capabilities are taking shape with these two major submarine deals. If signed on time, these projects will not only enhance national security but also support the country’s vision of defence self-reliance through Make in India. All eyes are now on the Defence Ministry and Mazagon Dock to move swiftly and avoid further delays.
