The fourth edition of SEMICON India 2025 is set to kick off in the national capital with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the event on Tuesday, September 2.
The 3-day event will bring together some of the world’s leading semiconductor experts and industry giants to discuss the future of India's semiconductor sector. This year, the government is preparing to unveil details about the next phase of its ambitious ₹76,000 crore India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which is expected to shape the future of the semiconductor ecosystem in India.
The event will feature prominent global leaders from the semiconductor industry, including Christophe Fouquet, CEO of ASML; Bob Chen, Vice-President of Foxconn; and Scott Chen, CEO of Kinsus, among other major figures. These leaders will participate in panels, sharing insights and discussing the opportunities and challenges facing the global semiconductor supply chain.
The event marks a milestone for India, which has been working towards building a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem from scratch, with the support of the ISM initiative launched in December 2021. Over the past four years, India has made significant strides in the semiconductor sector, with approvals granted for several key units, including chip fabrication, compound semiconductor fabrication, and outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing units.
The ₹76,000 crore ISM was launched to reduce India’s dependency on imports and position the country as a global player in semiconductor manufacturing. According to S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the initial phase of the ISM has seen significant progress, with approvals already granted for one chip fabrication unit and one compound semiconductor fabrication unit, alongside eight outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing units.
With the funds for Phase I nearly exhausted, the government is gearing up to introduce the next phase of the mission. This will include new strategies to enhance India’s competitiveness in the global semiconductor market, particularly in the design and raw material supply sectors.

During SEMICON India 2025, the government is expected to announce key details regarding Phase II of the ISM. While the government plans to continue its stance of not funding technology partnerships between Indian and foreign firms, it will likely extend support to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that aim to become raw material suppliers to global semiconductor companies.
The government is also exploring adjustments to the existing design-linked incentive (DLI) scheme. As part of Phase II, the Ministry is considering revising the selection process for companies, increasing grant amounts, and adopting a more liberal approach to the release of funds to ensure access to scale. These changes are aimed at making India a competitive hub for semiconductor design and production.
SEMICON India 2025 will serve as a crucial platform for unveiling the next steps in India’s semiconductor journey. The country’s vision to become a global semiconductor player is gaining momentum, and the upcoming announcements at the event are expected to catalyse further growth and investment in the sector.
