Sahara Refund Portal Restored by Government to Process 2 Million Pending Claims

The Ministry of Cooperation has restored the Sahara Refund Portal under the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies (CRCS), bringing the refund process back for around 2 million pending claims from genuine depositors of Sahara Group's cooperative societies, as per The Business Standard news report.
So far, about ₹9,267 crore has been refunded to nearly 4.2 million depositors, with payments transferred directly to their Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts.
Four Sahara Societies Covered
The portal covers claims related to four cooperative societies: Sahara Credit Cooperative Society, Saharayn Universal Multipurpose Society, Humara India Credit Cooperative Society and Stars Multipurpose Cooperative Society.
The Ministry said the refund process had been held up by operational and administrative difficulties involving IT infrastructure, licences, hardware maintenance and manpower.
Portal Functioning Restored
The Ministry of Cooperation said it intervened to address these problems and restore the systems needed to verify and process claims.
The cooperative societies' functioning had also been affected in November 2025 after their premises were sealed over matters that, according to the statement, were unrelated to the Sahara societies.
Claims Go Through Aadhaar-Based Verification
The refund process remains digital and paperless. Claims are checked through Aadhaar e-KYC, with depositor, membership and bank-account details matched against the records of the respective societies.
Deposit certificates and other required documents are also examined under the approved standard operating procedure.
Portal Was Launched in 2023
The Sahara Refund Portal was originally launched in July 2023 following a Supreme Court order. Its purpose was to facilitate refunds for eligible depositors of the Sahara cooperative societies.
With the portal restored, verification and processing of the pending claims can now resume.
