India’s Wi-Fi Facility to Benefit Farmers Under BharatNet and PMWANI Initiatives

The Government of India is expanding Wi-Fi and broadband facilities in rural regions through projects like BharatNet and PMWANI. These initiatives are enabling farmers to access agricultural knowledge, digital services, and modern tools to enhance productivity and connectivity.
Expanding Rural Connectivity: BharatNet’s Outreach
As of June 30, 2025, 6,26,055 out of 6,44,131 villages in India have mobile internet facilities. The BharatNet project aims to achieve complete broadband coverage in all Gram Panchayats and villages in a phased approach. Till August 2025, 13,01,193 Fibre to the Home (FTTH) connections have been activated.
These high-speed Wi-Fi services are vital for e-education, e-commerce, e-health and e-governance, especially benefiting farmers through access to real-time agricultural updates and technological developments.
Strengthening Infrastructure Through Government Schemes
Under the Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN), multiple connectivity projects are enhancing mobile and internet services. The 4G saturation project added 21,748 mobile towers by June 2025. Further, ₹3,000 crore was set aside under Part-V (Optical Fibre Cable) of the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment 2022-23. These funds are being utilised to extend BharatNet from Gram Panchayats to villages, improving Last Mile Connectivity for homes, schools, health centres and more.

Digital Empowerment Through PMWANI Public Wi-Fi Network
To make broadband more accessible, the Department of Telecom (DoT) implemented the Prime Minister’s Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PMWANI) scheme. By August 2025, 3,53,105 hotspots were installed. PMWANI ensures cost-effective internet availability, fuelling digital inclusion for rural businesses, educational institutions and farmers.
Benefits to Farmers and Rural Communities
Wi-Fi-enabled FTTH connections support farmers in accessing information on modern cultivation practices, weather forecasts, government schemes and marketing trends. The overall aim is to bridge the digital divide, empower rural citizens and contribute to inclusive economic growth.
Conclusion
With initiatives like BharatNet and PMWANI, India is rapidly expanding rural broadband access. The deployment of FTTH connections and Wi-Fi hotspots is not only transforming the digital landscape but also transforming the future for millions of farmers and rural communities across the nation.
