India is experiencing a prolonged spell of extreme heat, with the India Meteorological Department warning of continued heatwave conditions. Temperatures in several regions have already exceeded 45°C, posing health and infrastructure challenges.
The current weather pattern is expected to persist over the next 4 to 5 days without immediate relief. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as demand for electricity and healthcare services increases.
The IMD has identified multiple states across north, central, and eastern India that are likely to remain under intense heatwave conditions. These include Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand, among others.
Parts of Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh are also affected. Severe heatwave conditions are expected in isolated pockets, particularly in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Haryana.
Extreme temperatures have been recorded across several locations, highlighting the severity of the heatwave. On May 26, 2026, Banda in Uttar Pradesh and Brahmpuri in Maharashtra recorded the highest temperatures at 47.6°C.
Several other cities have reported temperatures above 45°C, intensifying health risks. Persistently high temperatures are contributing to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke in vulnerable populations.
The ongoing heatwave has significantly increased electricity consumption across the country. India’s peak power demand recently crossed 270 GW, driven by extensive use of cooling devices such as air conditioners and fans.
This surge in demand has placed pressure on the power grid, leading to localised outages in some regions. The situation reflects the strain on infrastructure during extreme climatic conditions.
While heatwave conditions continue in many parts of the country, some regions are expected to experience changing weather patterns. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms, dust storms, and light rain in parts of Delhi-NCR from May 28, 2026, onwards.
Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh may see a temperature drop between May 29, 2026, and May 31, 2026. Southern and northeastern states, including Kerala, Karnataka, Assam, and Meghalaya, are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

The current heatwave highlights the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions across India. Persistently high temperatures have affected public health and increased pressure on electricity infrastructure.
While some areas may see temporary relief through rainfall and thunderstorms, large regions continue to face significant heat stress. The situation underscores the importance of monitoring weather patterns and ensuring preparedness during periods of extreme climate events.
