The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to 14 food business operators (FBOs) for alleged violations related to misleading brand names, trade names and product claims under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The regulator said the notices were issued after it found that certain product names and marketing claims could potentially mislead consumers. FSSAI has directed the food business operators to comply with the prescribed labelling and display regulations.
The notices have been issued to the following brands:
Healthy Master
Neuherbs
Plan B
The Health Factory
Troovy
Healthy Choice
Emami Healthy & Tasty
Health Aid
Organic Wisdom
Shine Organic
Two Brothers Organic Farms
World of Organic
Storia Juice
Lota Water
According to FSSAI, the notices relate to misleading trade names, product descriptions, and marketing claims that may create an incorrect impression among consumers.
The regulator stated that Plan B's "Plant Based Vegan" branding may mislead consumers into believing the products are vegan, despite the company not having the required vegan food endorsement in its FSSAI licence.
The Health Factory's "Zero Maida Whole Wheat Bread" and "Zero Maida Pizza Base" have been questioned as the products contain chakki fresh atta and wheat gluten, making the "Zero Maida" claim potentially misleading under applicable regulations.
FSSAI said the trade name "True Vitamin" is neither defined nor recognised under existing regulations and may mislead consumers.
Products including "Healthy Mix Veggie Chips" have been flagged for using the term "Healthy" despite containing multiple other ingredients.
The regulator said the brand names and taglines used by these companies may mislead consumers regarding the nature of their products and appear to contravene applicable FSSAI regulations.
FSSAI has also raised concerns over the use of "Organic" in the branding of Organic Wisdom, Shine Organic, Two Brothers Organic Farms and World of Organic.
According to the regulator, these products do not have NPOP/PGS certification, the FSSAI Jaivik Bharat logo or the required organic endorsement, making the branding potentially misleading.
FSSAI also questioned Storia Juice Pomegranate, stating that its branding could create the impression that it is entirely pomegranate juice despite containing only 4% pomegranate juice concentrate.
Lota Water's "Feel The Difference" claim regarding the addition of minerals in packaged drinking water has also been flagged, with the regulator stating that such claims may not comply with existing regulations.
Earlier this month, FSSAI also issued notices to Nestlé India for Maggi, KFC, Flipkart and Open Secret after taking cognisance of complaints circulating on social media.
In the case of Maggi noodles, the regulator sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR), including vendor details, quality-check records, corrective measures and steps taken to prevent recurrence after allegations that insects or larvae were found inside a packet.
FSSAI's latest action against 14 food brands highlights its focus on ensuring that branding, labelling and product claims comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The regulator has directed food business operators to adhere to prescribed regulations to prevent consumer deception and improve transparency in food marketing.
