The Government of Maharashtra has approved the ‘Swayampoorna Maharashtra Residential Rooftop (SMART) Solar Scheme’ to promote rooftop solar installations among low-income households.
The initiative aims to make families below the poverty line (BPL) and those using less than 100 units of electricity per month more self-reliant in power generation. Around 5 lakh households are expected to benefit, receiving additional state subsidies alongside central support under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
The scheme offers significant financial aid to make solar energy more accessible. The benchmark installation cost is set at ₹50,000 per kW. For BPL households, the contribution is ₹2,500 per kW, while the state and central governments provide ₹17,500 and ₹30,000, respectively, covering about 95% of the total cost.
Economically weaker general category consumers will pay ₹10,000 per kW, supported by ₹10,000 from the state and ₹30,000 from the centre, making an 80% subsidy. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe households will contribute ₹5,000, while ₹15,000 will come from the state and ₹30,000 from the central government, covering 90% of the expense.
The SMART Solar Scheme is designed not just to reduce electricity bills but also to help families earn through surplus power sales. By encouraging rooftop solar adoption, the initiative aims to make low-income households energy-independent while contributing to the state’s renewable energy goals.
The scheme supports decentralised power generation, reducing dependence on conventional sources and improving grid stability in rural and remote areas.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) will implement the scheme. The state government has allocated ₹330 crore for FY 2025–26 and ₹325 crore for FY 2026–27 to support the rollout.
The programme will run until March 2027, with priority given to underserved and remote regions such as Melghat, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli. These areas will benefit from improved energy access and local job creation linked to solar installation and maintenance.

Through this initiative, Maharashtra aims to strengthen its renewable energy capacity while supporting low-income households. The scheme aligns with India’s commitment to achieving its COP26 climate goals, promoting sustainability, and empowering citizens through clean energy solutions.
