India’s installed solar power capacity has reached 125 gigawatts (GW). The update was shared by Union Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi. With this, India is now the third-largest solar energy producer in the world.

The announcement was made during the curtain raiser of the 8th International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly. The assembly will be held from October 27 to 30, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

International Solar Alliance Membership

The ISA, started jointly by India and France, now has 124 member countries. It provides a platform for cooperation among nations to increase the use of solar power.

The minister referred to the outcome of CoP28, which called for tripling renewable energy worldwide to 11,000 GW by 2030. He said solar will play an essential role in achieving this target.

The minister also mentioned the progress of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Under this scheme, more than 20 lakh households have installed rooftop solar panels and are using solar energy.

One of the ISA’s stated aims is to mobilise $1 trillion in solar investments by 2030. It also focuses on lowering the cost of solar technology and financing for member nations.

India’s Renewable Energy Expansion

The 125 GW figure is steady progress in India’s renewable energy expansion. Solar, along with wind and hydropower, continues to form a significant part of the country’s clean energy programme.
