Road accident victims across India will now be able to access cashless medical care under the Pradhan Mantri RAHAT scheme. The scheme has been approved by PM Modi and it aims to provide immediate medical support to victims without worrying about hospital deposits or upfront payments during emergencies.
Under PM RAHAT, every eligible road accident victim will be entitled to:
The scheme is designed to provide quick financial support immediately after an accident, when families are most vulnerable.
PM RAHAT also includes stabilisation care, depending on the severity of the case:
However, this stabilisation coverage will be subject to police authentication through an integrated digital system.
A major benefit of PM RAHAT is that it removes the need for victims or families to pay deposits or advances at hospitals. This will considerably reduce the risk of distress borrowing and offer financial protection against out-of-pocket expenses
Hospitals will be reimbursed through the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVAF).
The payment structure will work as follows:
Once a claim is approved by the State Health Agency, it will be paid within 10 days, helping hospitals continue providing uninterrupted treatment.
PM RAHAT is being implemented through a technology-led framework that integrates two platforms: eDAR platform and TMS 2.0. This system enables smooth digital processing from accident reporting to claim settlement, improving transparency and accountability.
Any complaints related to coverage or claim settlement will be handled by a Grievance Redressal Officer, nominated by the District Road Safety Committee. This committee is chaired by the District Collector, District Magistrate, or Deputy Commissioner.
PM RAHAT is a major step towards citizen-first healthcare protection after road accidents. By offering cashless treatment of up to ₹1.5 lakh for seven days and ensuring quick hospital reimbursements, the scheme aims to reduce financial hardship for families and improve access to emergency care across India.
