The Union Health Ministry has announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially start the HPV vaccination programme for all 14-year-old girls in India from Ajmer, Rajasthan on February 28, 2026.

Nationwide HPV vaccination launch from Ajmer

The launch is scheduled for 11.30 am on February 28, 2026, and will be streamed live to all states and Union territories. Chief ministers, administrators and state health ministers will join virtually through a coordinated network link.

Vaccine details and administration plan

The programme will use a single shot of Gardasil 4, a quadrivalent vaccine that protects against HPV types 16 and 18 that cause cervical cancer and types 6 and 11 that cause other conditions.

The vaccine will be administered at government health facilities including Ayushman Arogya Mandir Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, sub district and district hospitals and government medical colleges.

Logistics and consent requirements

Each vaccination site will have a cold chain point and a dedicated medical officer for adverse event following immunisation management. Participation is voluntary and written consent from a parent or guardian is mandatory.

The vaccine will be available daily for a 3-month period to ensure maximum coverage, after which it will be offered on routine immunisation days.

State level coordination

All states have received training from the Union Health Ministry and the required number of doses has been supplied. Reportedly, officials are instructed to set up a special vaccination session site at the state or Union territory headquarters, ensure cold chain facilities and allocate a medical officer for the launch day.

Conclusion

The February 28 launch marks the formal start of India’s effort to prevent cervical cancer through vaccination of 14-year-old girls, with coordinated implementation across all states and Union territories.
