The Maharashtra government has closed 6.8 million accounts under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana due to beneficiaries failing to complete the mandatory e-KYC process by the deadline, as per PTI report. This decision impacts the scheme's monthly expenditure of ₹3,700 crore.
Nearly 6.8 million beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana in Maharashtra have had their accounts closed after failing to complete the mandatory e-KYC process before the deadline.
The deadline, initially set for March 31, has been extended to April 30, allowing beneficiaries more time to complete the verification process.
The Maharashtra government initiated the verification exercise following complaints about ineligible individuals receiving benefits.
Eligibility for the scheme requires women aged 21 to 65 years, with an annual family income below ₹2.5 lakh, not receiving benefits from other state welfare schemes, and possessing an Aadhaar-linked bank account.
During the verification exercise, over 2.4 million beneficiaries were flagged as government employees due to confusion caused by a Marathi question in the form.
After further scrutiny, around 2 million accounts were declared eligible, while verification of the remaining cases continues.
The closure of accounts reduces the number of active beneficiaries to approximately 17.5 million, likely affecting the monthly expenditure of ₹3,700 crore.
The government allocated ₹26,000 crore for the programme in the 2026-27 budget, down from ₹36,000 crore in 2025-26.
Beneficiaries can complete the e-KYC process online through the official portal. Verification is mandatory every year, requiring women to repeat the process annually to continue receiving benefits.
Steps include visiting the official website, clicking on the e-KYC option, and submitting required details such as name, address, Aadhaar information, ration card number, and income details.
