The Delhi Government has introduced a new scheme, the 'Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana,' aimed at providing financial assistance to support girls' education, as per PTI report.
This initiative replaces the existing Ladli Scheme and came into effect following a gazette notification from the Department of Women and Child Development.
Under the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana, eligible girls will receive financial support amounting to ₹61,000, which could mature to ₹1,20,000 with interest.
The assistance will be distributed in instalments tied to critical educational milestones starting from birth through higher education courses.
The aim is to encourage continuous education among girls, prevent early marriages, and support their advancement in terms of education.
According to the scheme, the girl child must be born in Delhi and should have resided in the National Capital Territory for at least 3 years before applying.
Additionally, the annual family income should not exceed ₹1,20,000, and benefits will be restricted to 2 girls per family. The girl must attend a government-recognised school in Delhi.
A significant stipulation is that beneficiaries remain unmarried until they reach 18 years. Breaching this condition could result in disqualification, with the accumulated amount returned to the government.
The scheme is structured to deposit ₹11,000 at birth and ₹5,000 upon admission to Classes 1, 6, 9, 11, and 12.
Financial aid for further educational courses includes ₹10,000 for a 1-year diploma, ₹20,000 for 2 or 3-year diplomas, and up to ₹25,000 for a 4-year degree programme.
Registration for the scheme is available within 1 year of birth or at significant educational stages, with applications submitted online.

Special provisions for girls residing in child care institutions may allow for relaxed eligibility criteria.
Financial assistance will be deposited into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts under the girl's name, being encashable upon maturity at age-specific milestones.
It is non-transferable and non-refundable unless the beneficiary meets unfortunate circumstances like death.
The Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana represents a focused approach to support girls in Delhi through structured financial aid, encouraging educational progress, and reducing early marriage occurrences. It plays an essential role in enhancing the quality and accessibility of education for girls, crucial for their personal and professional growth.
