The Maharashtra government has started steps to reclaim funds disbursed to beneficiaries who did not meet eligibility criteria under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana.
The move follows a review that found payments had been made to individuals who were excluded under the scheme’s rules.
District authorities have been instructed to begin verification and recovery in a phased manner.
The Women and Child Development Department has directed district collectors and departmental officers to trace and recover amounts paid to ineligible recipients.
The recovery process has already commenced, with officials working at the district level to identify cases where benefits were wrongly credited.
According to the government, several groups have been found to fall outside the scheme’s eligibility framework.
These include men who received benefits despite the scheme being meant for women, government employees who are excluded due to service and income conditions, and women whose income or documentation did not align with the prescribed norms.
Authorities have noted that some beneficiaries were already availing support under other government schemes, which made them ineligible for the ₹1,500 monthly assistance.
As part of the corrective process, beneficiary accounts will be reviewed in detail over the next two months to verify eligibility and determine recovery amounts.
Recovery notices are being prepared locally and will be issued in stages. Officials stated that action may also be taken against individuals who knowingly claimed benefits despite being aware of their ineligibility, in line with existing administrative procedures.

The recovery exercise reflects the government’s effort to enforce eligibility norms and ensure targeted delivery of welfare benefits. The process is expected to continue over the coming months as verification and recovery measures progress across districts.
