Safran Aircraft Engine Services Facility in Hyderabad: India’s First Global MRO Hub Launched

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated Safran Aircraft Engine Services India's MRO facility in Hyderabad. This state-of-the-art centre is India’s first global engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul hub, marking a pivotal step for the aviation sector's self-reliance and growth. 

India’s First Global Aircraft MRO Facility Operational in Hyderabad 

Located at GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park, within the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport SEZ, the Safran Aircraft Engine Services India (SAESI) facility is the first global MRO centre in the country set up by an international engine OEM.  

This ₹1,300 crore investment covers 45,000 square metres and will reach an annual capacity of 300 LEAP engines by 2035. These engines are pivotal to flying Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. 

The facility is expected to generate employment for over 1,000 skilled Indian technicians and engineers. Advanced process equipment will ensure world-class standards in engine maintenance and repairs, fulfilling global safety and efficiency benchmarks. 

Strengthening the Aviation Sector and Aatmanirbhar Bharat 

The new MRO unit is likely help India as 85% of MRO activities for Indian aircraft were previously conducted overseas. By building domestic repair capacity, the project supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and strengthens India’s aviation supply chain ecosystem. 

With indigenous capabilities, this initiative will also open global avenues for Indian engineers and technicians, making India a preferred destination for MRO operations in Asia.

Safran Deepens its Commitment to Indian Aerospace 

Alongside this facility, Safran has announced additional defence-related investments, contributing to the ‘Make in India’ campaign. The company will support the Rafale fighter jet programme and has formed a joint venture with Bharat Electronics Limited to enhance military aerospace development. 

Safran aims to triple its Indian revenue to above €3 billion by 2030, with 50% of that generated from its Indian sites. The company also plans to multiply its sourcing from India by 5 times, reflecting deepening reliance and confidence in local manufacturing capabilities.
