LeapFrog Investments is looking to put $80 million to $100 million into India's healthcare sector over the next two years, as the private equity firm sees more room for growth in medical services.

Biju Mohandas, Global Head and Partner for Healthcare at LeapFrog, said the firm is looking at several opportunities in India. Its interest comes as insurance coverage expands and more people spend on diagnostics and preventive healthcare.

Hospitals and Specialty Care on the Radar

LeapFrog is considering investments in hospitals serving patients outside major cities, along with single-specialty healthcare providers. Maternal and child health, ophthalmology and oncology are among the specialty areas being evaluated.

The firm is also looking at an asset-light, single-specialty healthcare provider, although Mohandas did not disclose the name or other details. Pharmaceuticals and medical equipment are also part of the firm's broader search in India.

Healthcare Market Draws More Investment

India's healthcare sector was valued at around $180 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach $320 billion by 2028, according to government data cited in the report.

The sector has also attracted considerable deal activity. Healthcare and pharmaceutical companies recorded 594 M&A and private equity deals worth more than $30 billion between 2022 and 2024, according to Grant Thornton Bharat and the Association of Healthcare Providers India.

LeapFrog Already Has India Investments

LeapFrog already has exposure to India's healthcare market through investments in Redcliffe Labs, a diagnostics provider, and Healthify, a digital health platform.

Mohandas said the firm's investment approach is based on rising insurance penetration and increasing disposable income that can support spending on quality healthcare.
