India Signs Agreement With US To Procure Javelin Anti-Tank Missile System for Army

India has signed an agreement with the United States to buy the Javelin anti-tank guided missile system for the Indian Army, the US Mission in India said on Friday, according to a Business Standard news report. 

The purchase has been made through the US Foreign Military Sales programme. India signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance, or LOA, which is the agreement used by the US government for the transfer of defence equipment and services to foreign governments. 

The US Mission did not disclose the value of the agreement. 

Earlier Estimate Put Deal at $45.7 Million 

The US State Department had cleared the possible sale of the Javelin system and related equipment to India in November. At the time, the proposed deal was estimated to be worth up to $45.7 million. 

A defence source confirmed that the agreement had been signed but did not comment on the cost of the purchase. 

Details released earlier by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency showed that India was expected to buy 100 FGM-148 Javelin missile rounds and 25 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units or Javelin Block 1 Command Launch Units. 

Training and Support Included in Package 

The package is also expected to include trainers for the launch units, missile simulation rounds, operator manuals, spare parts and lifecycle support. 

Other logistics equipment and support services are also part of the proposed procurement. The final details and value of the signed agreement were not disclosed by the US Mission. 

What Is the Javelin System? 

The Javelin is a shoulder-launched anti-tank weapon used by infantry. It is a medium-range system and uses a fire-and-forget mechanism, allowing the operator to move after firing the missile. 

The weapon has a maximum range of more than 4,500 metres. It is mainly used against tanks and other armoured vehicles, but can also be used against bunkers. 

The system consists of a reusable Lightweight Command Launch Unit, or Command Launch Unit, and a missile housed in a disposable launch-tube assembly. It can also be mounted on vehicles, aircraft and watercraft. 

Made by RTX and Lockheed Martin 

The Javelin system is produced by the Javelin Joint Venture, a partnership between RTX Corporation and Lockheed Martin. It is used by the US Army, the US Marine Corps and several other countries. 

The US Mission said the agreement could also lead to further cooperation between the Indian and US defence industries. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the deal created opportunities for defence industry collaboration between the two countries.
