
As per PIB report, A total of 38 railway infrastructure projects covering 5,098 km and amounting to ₹89,780 crore have been sanctioned in Maharashtra as of April 1, 2025.
These include new lines, gauge conversions, and track doubling aimed at enhancing passenger and cargo movement efficiency across the state.
As per official data, the Ministry of Railways has approved 11 new line projects (1,355 km), 2 gauge conversion projects (609 km), and 25 doubling/multitracking projects (3,134 km), summing to 5,098 km in total. By March 2025, 2,360 km of this has been commissioned, with ₹39,407 crore expended.
Key completed routes include Pune-Miraj-Londa doubling (467 km), Jabalpur-Gondia gauge conversion (300 km), and Daund-Gulbarga doubling (225 km). Numerous Mumbai suburban expansion works have also been implemented to cater to growing urban transport demand.
In the Mumbai region, where 120 Mail/Express and about 3,200 suburban trains operate daily, various capacity improvements are ongoing. Platform extensions at 34 stations to accommodate 15-car EMUs have been initiated.
MUTP-II, III, and IIIA collectively valued at over ₹52,000 crore include significant corridor projects such as the CSMT-Kurla 6th line, Borivali-Virar 6th line, and Panvel-Karjat segment, among others.
Further, 238 rakes of 12-car EMUs with doors have been sanctioned under MUTP-III & IIIA for ₹19,293 crore to handle increased footfall.

Between 2009-14, average yearly commissioning was 58.4 km, whereas post-2014 it surged to 208.36 km. Annual budget allocations have also grown over 20 times, from ₹1,171 crore to ₹23,778 crore in 2025-26.
This significant rise indicates prioritised funding for enhancing the railway network inside Maharashtra.
Recent commissioning highlights include Udhna-Jalgaon doubling (307 km), and the Bhusawal-Jalgaon 3rd and 4th lines (24 km each).
Projects like the Itarsi-Nagpur 4th line (297 km), Wardha-Bhusawal 3rd and 4th line (314 km), Gondia-Dongargarh 4th line (84 km), and Indore-Manmad new line (360 km) are among the major investments. The Jalna-Jalgaon new line (174 km) alone is costed at ₹5,804 crore.
The sanctioned railway projects in Maharashtra reflect a significant infrastructure push by Indian Railways. These efforts, with substantial budget allocations, focus on addressing urban demand while improving regional connectivity through new lines, gauge conversions, and doublings.
