India Joins US-Led 6G Initiative With 26 Governments

India has joined the US-led Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, bringing the number of participating governments to 26. The initiative is focused on cooperation around the way next-generation telecom networks are developed, secured and connected across countries. 

India was not part of the original group of 25 governments that endorsed the framework when it was launched on July 27 by the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). 

26 Governments Now Part of the Framework 

The US Department of Commerce announced India's entry after Union Minister of State Jitin Prasada met US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick during the G20 Innovation Ministerial in North Carolina. 

The framework covers cooperation on 6G network security, interoperability and resilience. It also includes the use of trusted artificial intelligence in the development and operation of 6G infrastructure. 

Participating governments have committed to working together over the next 12 months and beyond. 

India Continues its Own 6G Programme 

India's participation in the international initiative comes alongside its domestic work through the Bharat 6G Mission and Bharat 6G Alliance. 

The domestic programme aims to increase India's role in 6G intellectual property, products and affordable telecom solutions, while supporting participation in international standards bodies. 

The Bharat 6G Alliance has set a target of deploying 6G technologies in India by 2030, while formal technical specifications are expected to begin taking shape from 2027. 

No Funding or Deployment Plan Announced 

India's entry into the international framework does not come with a funding commitment, commercial project or spectrum allocation. 

There is also no India-specific deployment timeline attached to the announcement. The initiative is currently focused on policy coordination as governments work towards the standards and networks that will define 6G.

Conclusion 

India's addition takes the US-led 6G framework to 26 participating governments. For India, the international cooperation adds to its separate domestic 6G programme, with security, interoperability and trusted AI among the areas covered by the initiative.
