The 57th GST Council meeting, earlier fixed for September 12, 2026, is now likely to be held on October 7, 2026, in New Delhi, according to The Business Standard news report. The new date is yet to be officially notified.

The meeting was postponed after the original date clashed with the BRICS Leaders’ Summit on September 12 and 13, 2026.

Preparatory Meetings Scheduled

GST officials are due to meet on October 5 and 6 ahead of the Council meeting. The first meeting is scheduled for 3 pm on October 5, followed by another at 11 am on October 6, 2026.

New Delhi is also to remain the venue for the Council meeting. The October 7 date, however, will need formal confirmation through an official notification.

What Was Decided at the Last Meeting

The proposed meeting will come after a gap of more than a year. The last, or 56th, GST Council meeting was held on September 3 and 4, 2025.

The Council approved the GST 2.0 overhaul at that meeting. Most goods and services were brought under two main rates of 5% and 18%.

A 40% GST rate was also introduced for a limited set of luxury and demerit goods. It replaced the earlier 28% rate along with the compensation cess on these products. The new rates took effect from September 22, 2025.

ITC and Refunds Among Pending Issues

The October meeting is expected to take up pending matters concerning input tax credit, refunds, and GST compliance. Proposals to ease restrictions on some ITC claims are among the issues under consideration.

The Council is also expected to discuss accumulated input tax credits linked to the inverted duty structure.

Council's Meeting Schedule

The GST Council is chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and has finance ministers from all states and Union Territories as members.

Its rules require the Council to meet at least once every quarter. In practice, some meetings have been held after longer gaps.
