Alternative-Fuel Vehicles Overtake Petrol in India’s Passenger-Vehicle Market in August 2026

Something changed in India's car market in August 2026. As per The Economic Times news report citing Equirus Securities report, CNG, hybrid and electric cars together accounted for 41.95% of passenger-vehicle sales. Petrol and ethanol cars were at 40.85%. This is the first time the three alternative fuel options have taken a bigger share than petrol and ethanol. 

The overall auto market also had a good August. Dealers sold 24.23 lakh vehicles during the month, 17.51% more than they sold in August last year. Sales were lower than July, though, when the industry had its biggest month so far. 

Passenger Vehicle Sales Cross 4 Lakh 

Car sales crossed 4 lakh units in August 2026, for the first time in the month. Dealers sold 4,02,398 passenger vehicles, 16.14% more than a year ago. 

Two-wheelers remained the biggest seller with 17,14,610 units. Sales were up 19.69% from August last year. Commercial vehicles also did well, with sales rising 14.45% to 90,769 units. 

Rural Buyers Spend More 

Rural areas had a better month than cities. Vehicle sales in rural markets went up 19.79% from a year ago, while urban sales rose 15.17%. Two-wheeler sales in rural areas rose 20.25%. Urban sales grew 19.07%. 

EV Sales Keep Rising 

Electric vehicle sales are also picking up. Dealers sold 2,98,448 EVs across all vehicle categories in August. That was 52.9% more than a year earlier. 

In passenger vehicles, petrol and ethanol's share fell to 40.85% from 46.37%. CNG cars had a 25.28% share, hybrids had 9.04% and EVs had 7.63%.

Conclusion 

August 2026 brought a clear change in what Indian car buyers chose. CNG, hybrid and electric cars together moved ahead of petrol and ethanol for the first time. Overall vehicle sales were also higher than a year ago, with rural markets growing faster than cities.
